Prior Meetings

Bruce Herschenson, former KABC radio and TV commentator was our speaker for lunch on 5/31/02

Bruce (in the center) is shown standing next to President Hal Quigley and his good friend Jonathan Kemp. Bruce now lectures on “U.S. Foreign Policy” at Pepperdine University. He usually starts every lecture by reviewing the days headlines. Today's headlines read "India and Pakistan Move Closer to War". Bruce left us with a sobering thought when he told us that a conflict between these two nuclear armed Countries could lead to World War III.   New member Charlie Follette is shown immediately after receiving presidential recognition for his nursery being featured in the Home & Garden Magazine.

President Hal's Quotes for the Day:

Robert Frost:  A Liberal is a man too broadminded to take his own side in a quarrel.

Anthony Powell:  Growing old is like being increasingly penalized for a crime you have not committed.

Dan Bennett:  There's nothing wrong with the younger generation that becoming taxpayers won't cure.

Nehru:  Democracy is good. I say this because other systems are worse.

Our guest speaker for lunch on 5/17/02 was UCLA's renowned heart transplant surgeon Dr. Daniel Morelli.
Shown with Dr. Morelli are chair of our "Organ Donor Awareness Program" Carol Jackson and President Hal Quigley. Carol explained to us that about 15 people a day die while waiting for donor organs. Dr. Morelli explained that transplanting an artificial heart in a patient may give a critical patient a little more time to find a donor organ.

President Hal's Quotes for the Day:

William Law:  Be intent upon the perfection of the present day.

Benjamin Franklin: In this world, nothing is certain but death and taxes.

David Lloyd George: Don't be afraid to take a big step if one is indicated. You can't cross a chasm in two small jumps.

Thanks to chair person Lorraine Jossel, we honored our Police, Fire Fighters, and Teachers for lunch on 5/10/02.

Our own Chief Jim Butts presents Detective John Henry his award. John is a 28 year veteran of law enforcement who investigates criminal activity such as robbery and homicide. John is an officer that is always ready to help 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Due to his tireless efforts, he has been responsible for solving numerous cases, such as helping to convict a serial rapist, and an individual who was infecting persons with AIDS infected needles. Congratulations John, the world needs more individuals like you! Fire Chief Ettore Berardinello presents Emergency Services Coordinator Ellen McNiell with her award. She is a disaster preparedness expert and has produced the acclaimed video "Before it's too late". This video shows us what to do in situations when disaster strikes. Ellen is a dedicated public servant  who has a positive attitude with vision,  and one who really cares about the safety of us all.

Thank you Ellen, from the Rotary Club of Santa Monica.

Our own Superintendent of Schools John Deasy presents McKinley Elementary teacher Keri King with her award. Keri teaches the 4th and 5th grade, she is one of a few teachers who has passed the National Teaching Boards. Superintendent John tells us that her students "love Keri". Keri tells us that she cries on the last day of school each year knowing that her 5th grade students must move on.

Keri, thanks for the help and care that  you have given to our children.

President Hal's Quotes for the Day:

Winston Churchill:  I am easily satisfied with the very best.

William Feather:  The reward of energy, enterprise and thrift is taxes.

Our Club was recognized for its substantial community and Rotarian achievements. Behind a great club is always a great leader. Our great leader was no other than Hal Quigley, shown with District Governor Len Wasserstein who presented him with "President of the Year" recognition.

I count 26 District awards. Way to go Santa Monica!

Past President Bill Hunt filled in for President Hal Quigley for lunch on 5/3/02. Bill turned what is usually "Aloha Day" into "Farmer's Day". He told us  "you don't have to be a farmer to be outstanding in your field". Our guest speakers for the day were "Craft Talkers" Kathy Dodson and Myles Pritchard.
Kathy Dodson recently became the Executive Director of the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce. Last year she  moved here from Texas. Kathy is one of our younger members who is  looking forward to all of the twists and turns that her future may bring.  Myles Pritchard explained to us that he is a 7th generation Bahamian, who recently moved here. He is employed as  an Investment Protection Specialist at Merrill Lynch, he loves sports and  participated in the 1996 Olympics. Myles also enjoys working on community projects and can't wait to get involved in RCSM Committees. Past President Schiller Colberg cracks up as "Farmer" Bill Hunt receives a bag of carrots from Jim Menzies. Bill explains that he will use the carrots to feed his 3 legged pig of which is is very fond of. (If you missed this meeting be sure and ask Bill about his pig)
