FLATS OR PUMPS?

This week man-about-town NAT TRIVES had the job of trying to corral the club, a job that can best be described as trying to herd cats.  He did it spectacularly, as he put it, standing in the shoes of the PresiDEEnt.

Bringing a sense of spirituality to the meeting was CLARENCE DAVIS using his invocational skills with great aplomb, JUDY NEVEAU was keeping NAT occupied while KENT COLBERG was welcoming our Guestatarians and Visitors.  MARV LEVIN did a quick intro, ( I said NAT was good!) of Past District Governor PAUL NETZEL who spoke on the role of ROTARY and the many accomplishments in its history.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

GO FAULKNER !   GO HEMINGWAY!  GO PLATO! GO SHAKESPEARE!

KRIS ANDRESEN, SUSAN DAWSON, SHIRLEY DOWLING, JOHN MCINTIRE, ED MOOSBRUGGER, AND TIM SHANNON are looking for some help with the 2004 LITERACY PROJECTS.  This past week was the first of two days of collections for the book inventory at the SANTA MONICA ROTARY BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB CENTER AT JOHN ADAMS MIDDLE SCHOOL.

The club supports this project by acceptance of CHECKS, CASH, MONEY ORDERS AND LABOR.  You can assist in the project by dropping your money in the envelopes that two volunteers will be holding as we leave the meeting this Friday.  If  you can read this, you should be donating, so that others can read.

BREAKFAST FOR THE DISTRICT.

The PresiDEEnt wants to remind everyone that we have a district breakfast on the 18th.  Please see BARBARA HOPPER about reservations.

NEW MEMBERS!!

We are a growing Rotary Club, this week we inducted FIVE new members into the club:   we have a business consultant who is a SoCal native – JILLIAN ALEXANDER. As part of our effort to get more flexible we have a gymnastics guru – MICHAEL CATES from BROADWAY GYMNASTIC SCHOOL. Continuing to increase our automobile division is MARK HARDING from S.M. Toyota, he’s a native who attended Samohi and LMU with a degree in history.  Next up is a clear overachiever, WILLIAM FRANK, already has a Pepperdine MBA, and now wants to get a law degree from Southwestern. He even likes Politics! And what group of newbies would be complete with the Marines represented? RICHARD TAUSSIG is our new member who loves the sea, his hobby of sailing keeps him busy.

SMC ALUMNI FINED

NAT the enforcer was out this week, he even fined PIEDAD ROBERTSON, who is busy with the Governator these days – she got a $200 fine for her political connections.  The rest of the alumni in the room were fined $10 each for anyone who took classes at SMC.  Phew, glad I went to the Learning Annex for that Wine Drinking Class!

OTHER FINES THIS WEEK

A certain Family Law Impressario was seen in his wife’s ( so he says ) new Mercedes SL500.  It’s black and gorgeous and for the first time in his life, CON OYLER was left speechless. His $500 fine was a Duesie for this Daimler.  Don’t worry Con, it’s a community debt!

BOB SULLIVAN hopefully had a grand time at the Grand Canyon since it’s costing him $200.

DAVID’S DOODLINGS

When I decided to go into politics I weighed the cost: I would get criticism. But I went ahead. So when the virulent criticism came, I wasn’t surprised. I was better able to handle it.

--- HERBERT HOOVER, 31st President

The sages do not consider that making no mistakes is a blessing; they believe, rather, that the great virtue of man lies in his ability to correct his mistakes and continually to make a new man of himself.

--- WANG YANG-MING, Philosopher
