Our guests for our Christmas/Holiday meeting on 12/20/02 were the Barbershop Style Singing Group the Santa Monica Oceanaires.  Santa also made his appearance.

What an experience, "The  Oceanaires" sang us Christmas Carols and other Holiday tunes.  Proud Grandpa Lionel Ruhman is shown with his grandson, waiting for the arrival of Santa.

 

Leslie Dutton Host and producer of the television program "Full Disclosure" was our guest on 12/13/02

Kris Andresen (left) is shown with Leslie. Leslie talked a little about her Emmy Award series on the L.A. Police Department. Leslie who has interviewed the last 4 or so  L.A.P.D. Police Chiefs gave us some insight as to how a Police Chief is chosen. She gave us the "story behind the story" and made us wonder if the selection of a Police Chief is really just a political process. 

 

Today's program on December 6, 2002 was a concert put on by the Santa Monica Woodwind Quintet.

Shown taking a bow after the Quintet's great performance is Bill Wood's wife Sherril who performed on the Flute. The other performers were Dana Sundene on the Oboe, Lisa Kohorn on the Clarinet, Lisa Knorr on the Bassoon and John Petring on the French Horn.

 

Our speaker today 11/22/02 was world famous entertainment attorney Jay Cooper

Jay Meet Jay!

Our own toy engineer Jay Smith (on the right) congratulated Jay Cooper for a great presentation. Cooper explained how the Music Industry is now in turmoil with the consolidation of the Record Companies and the general public's "Napster" logic that music should be free. 

 

Today on 11/15/02 Steve Alexis and John Deasy shared with us a little about their lives when they presented their "Craft Talks".

"Everybody has a Story" Steve (shown left), is congratulated by Ken Mirch. Steve who is an executive at Asiana Airlines told us an amazing tale. He explained how he escaped over to "Free" Italy in the Late 1950's from his native Communist Country of Yugoslavia.  John is the Superintendent of the Santa Monica, Malibu School District. John is married and has  three children. His belief is that all children have an unlimited ability to learn.  As Superintendent he wants to make sure each child's unlimited potential is nourished.

 

Donald B. Rice was the 17th Secretary of the Air Force.  Today 11/8/02, he gave us a pertinent presentation.  First, we received a quick education on bio-technology.  He used the example of cancer in this section of his talk.  Then, we were updated on “Bio-Terrorism in the 21st Century”.  We were informed on the requirements of a viable Homeland Security, including the interplay of the Executive Branch & the military.
Past President Bill Fritzsche had the honors today of inducting eleven new members.  Pictured is “New Member” Bettina Duval with a classification of Fund Raising and her sponsor, Allan Young.
As part of our annual Veterans Day Program, Rotarians were asked to wear a part of their uniforms.  Ken Miller was able to fit into his uniform (no tailoring required) and Bill Aspinwall was appropriately dressed for the occasion.

 

 

Vice President Dave Rimer congratulated  Dr. Don Rice on a job well done.

 

 

Gordon Lloyd - Professor of Political Economy at Pepperdine University talked to us about "Con's Law" on 11/01/02. After Gordon's presentation, our member and attorney Con Oyler explained his version of "Con's Law".

Actually Con's Law stands for Constitution Law. Gordon explained to us that it is not true that our Country has 3 "equal" branches of Government. He explained that the legislative branch is the most powerful because this is the only branch that is given the authority to amend the constitution.  Birthdays were celebrated!
