HEADS UP!
HISTORY MAKING MEETING!
This past week was another history making meeting with the head table being an All-Female excursion into executive explanation.
Starting with the ever charming JUDY NEVEAU as our Visitors and Guests Greeter, to KRIS ANDRESEN invoking a spiritual serenity, we had MIJO KIM as new member spotlightee, the program chair was a woman of capability and accomplishment herself, our own Dr. KATHRYN DODSON who laid the foundation for an excellent and comprehensive review of the state of the city in Santa Monica by City Manager SUSAN McCARTHY.
The good news is that the projects around town are coming to a close soon, and that they have been paid for by previous capital allotments. The state of the city is over all stable, thanks in no small part to the hard work of the City Managers’ office, which is prevented from working on a long term budget, but does forecast five years in the future, so they are at least basically prepared for contingencies and upcoming projects and shortfalls.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
CENTENNIAL PROJECT Rotary John Adams Boys and Girls Club House
The Board of Directors has designated the Rotary John “Adams boys and Girls Clubhouse as a Centennial Project that will impact on our effort to have a major project during the 2005 100th Anniversary of the founding of Rotary.
As you know the center is open in one of the classrooms and is well staffed by Allan Young’s professionals.
Last year, the Club designated and donated $25,000 from the fine fund to the project. This amount was matched the SM Rotary Foundation. We started this project with $50,000 seed money. All Santa Monica Rotarians can be very proud. This is a continuation of long time involvement in youth projects – we virtually rebuilt the pool at Camp Josepho, among other projects.
Dee’s Board has voted to donate $12,500 this year as a challenge match for individual member donations. Several members have already stepped up to the plate, in some cases with donations of four figures! For those interested in pledging or simply writing big fat checks, please contact BILL CROOKSTON or send checks marked for the Boys & Girls Project to P.O. Box 586, SM, CA 90406.
“I would think that we could easily match the club donations with our own before the ground breaking in the fall” wrote Chairman Bill. Remembrances of the gifts will be placed on site. “Personally, I have been sending checks to Linda for people whom I want to remember. These local thanksgivings are often more meaningful than flowers or gifts to some remote, non-community project.” Continued Crookston.
Gifts sent with contact information for families and survivors will be acknowledged by Linda.
For further information please contact BILL CROOKSTON at 310/ 829-4655.
HOMEWORK SKILLS
This week the PresiDEEnt fined a couple of people, but frankly the only one I can remember is because the nature of the fine was so atypical for the man. SPYROS DELLAPORTAS was roasted for his motel being involved in some article about the hospitality trade. I didn’t quite follow what was going on, but something about women, parties and hotel rooms cost our own Guardian of Graciousness a fine.
If anyone can explain to me what happened I’ll be extremely grateful.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Friday, August 15, 2003 we will have a timely presentation on the "Historic Recall of California Governor, Gray Davis" by local attorney and nationally known election law expert, Colleen McAndrews and the Program Chair will be Tom Larmore.
Ms. McAndrews has served as legal counsel and treasurer to state and local political action committees, candidates and ballot measure committees, and represents Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. She advises corporate clients regarding local campaign and lobbying ordinances prevalent in Southern California, including the complex Los Angeles City Ethics Ordinance.
