The Rotary Club of Santa Monica's Scholarships and Youth Awards Committee, has the privilege of reviewing and awarding recognition to deserving students from our local schools and community college. This recognition comes in three categories: The $1,000.00 Named Scholarships Awards; The Citizenship Awards; and The Special Achievement Awards. These awards are presented annually at the first Club meeting in June. This year our Club will recognize and honor sixteen students from seven different schools and our local community college.
The $1,000.00 Named Scholarships are
given in honor of Rotarians and or loved ones who have passed on and are being
recognized for their contributions to Rotary and their community. This category
has been expanded to include the name of any Rotarian who sponsors a minimum of
a $1,000.00 scholarship. This year the Rotary Club of Santa Monica is proud to
give seven $1,000.00 scholarships to our future leaders.
The Citizenship Awards are coveted by our middle school students and are
given in recognition of outstanding service and good citizenship. Each student
will receive a plaque emblematic of this level of achievement. This honor has
proven to be highly motivational and the middle school principals add it to the
list of awards their students seek to attain.
The Special Achievement Awards are
new to our Club's Awards program in that we have only given the awards for a
couple years. The awards are probably the most deserved of all the awards we
give, because the winners do not come to the competition with a "level
playing field". These students have disabilities that require an enormous
amount of will, determination and courage to overcome in order to share some
small piece of what the "main stream" takes for granted.
