Susan Dawson, Director COMMITTEE OBJECTIVES To foster club
fellowship, health, physical, and community involvement through community
service activities. Through the
participation and generosity of Rotary Club members, the committees listed below
improve the present and future quality of life within our city.
Pledges made by club members are collected through fines levied by the
President. These monies (amounting
to over $40,000) are given to special Club projects and to non-profit
organizations to be used for their special projects.
Additionally, awards are given to young adults in the form of scholarship
and citizenship recognition. A.
MENTAL HEALTH / HEALTHY AGING & WWW.HELPGUIDE.ORG -
Robert Segal Objectives: 1
To inform the public about the professional, non-commercial resources
available on the Internet and in the community relating to mental/emotional
health, substance abuse, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, elder care, and
healthy aging and to assist the public in finding those sources of information
in a user-friendly, easily accessible manner. 2
To provide the community a user-friendly guide to local services agencies
for finding resources relating to particular problems and needs. Projects: 1
To maintain and enhance our website www.Helpguide.org
as a specialized, noncommercial Internet search engine for sources of
information. 2
To continually refine and upgrade www.Helpguide.org
to bring it to new levels of excellence, develop new links, search out
additional agencies, and to create new topic links. 3
To publicize our website in the local community, to Rotary Clubs
throughout the district and to all internet users. 4
To explore the feasibility of involving other Rotary Clubs in adding
agencies to the searchable local data base. B.
FUNCTIONAL LITERACY - Norma Barnes Objectives: 1
To increase the number of quality books to the Santa Monica schools. 2
To increase interest in reading among students, thus increasing literacy. 3
To increase awareness of Rotary community service among teachers,
students and parents. 4
Continue, for the third year, to collaborate with and assist Compton
Rotary, contributing books into their schools. Projects: 1
Holiday Book Drive: Participate
in the LA Times Holiday Book Drive. 2
Rotary Reads to Kids: Expand
the number of schools participating in Rotary Reads to Kids Week. 3
Bookends Holiday Sports Book Program:
Participation in this program if it is available this coming year. 4
SMMUSD Read 2 Connect Program: Participation
as a community service and financial sponsor. 5
Rotaract: Include members in book drive and Rotary Reads Week. C.
COMMUNITY AND YOUTH GRANTS - Kent Colberg / Nancy Freedman Objectives: 1
To allocate our financial resources in a way that will make an impact on
the human needs of our community. 2
To provide financial support to non-profit organizations (such as youth
organizations) which promote the welfare of youth or respond to special needs in
our community. Projects: 1
To support the Club’s Project for John Adams Middle School. 2
To solicit and review grant applications from non-profit community
organizations. 3
To encourage new and less well known community non-profit organizations
that serve youth and other segments of our community to apply for funding. 4
To identify a cause or non-profit organization for which we might become
a substantial backer or allocate a substantial amount of our available funds. 5 To convene the committee early in the year to plan our outreach to the community. D.
SCHOLARSHIP AND YOUTH AWARDS - Chris Lawson Objectives: 1
Review and award five $1000 annual scholarships. Activities: 1
Award $1000 annual scholarships from the following schools in the
following distributions:
(1) Santa Monica College
(Nick Holt Scholarship)
(1) Santa Monica College
(Archie M. Morrison Scholarship
(1) Olympic Continuation
School (John English Scholarship)
(2) Santa Monica High School
(Russell Hart Scholarship)
(1) St. Monica High School
(Thomas Fox Scholarship)
The schools select the winners. 2
Award additional scholarships through contributions by Rotarians. E.
IMMUNIZATION CLINIC - James Reidy Objectives: 1
To provide free immunizations for infants, adolescents and teenagers up
to 18 years of age, without regard to socio-economic background. Projects: 1
Team up with St. John’s Hospital in sponsoring an immunization clinic
approximately every six to eight weeks. Doctors
and nurses perform the injections and keep the records.
Rotarians set up and break down the clinic and keep the children occupied
with drinks, goodies and balloons. 2
Involve Rotaract members. F.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS - Tim Shannon Objectives: 1
Increase public awareness of the need for all citizens to work together
to try to better the quality of life by reducing pollution of the air, water and
land. Projects: 1
Join in cooperation with other community organizations to encourage the
local business community to take greater action in the fight against pollution. 2
Work with local schools to stimulate students to become more involved in
the fight against pollution.

Help clean up Santa Monica Bay beaches on Coastal Clean Up Day. G.
OCTOBERFAIR - Phil Tirone Objectives: 1
Increase Rotary visibility in community. 2
Provide fun and fellowship for Club members while helping the community.

Support local community organizations. Projects: 1
Participate in St. Monica’s annual Octoberfair. 2
Win the chili cook-off. H.
SALVATION ARMY KETTLE DAY- Frank Lavac Objectives: 1
To raise money for the Salvation Army in coordination with its December
Red Kettle Day Project. 2
To further Rotarian awareness and understanding of the Salvation Army’s
mission to meet human needs in our community. Projects: 1
Assist in December Red Kettle Day with Rotarian volunteers as bell
ringers. 2 Encourage donations from our own club. |
