Our Lunch Speaker on 10/26/01 was mountain climber Brent Didden. Brent gave us a moving presentation of his recent climb to the summit of Mt Everest. He explained how world famous Everest climber Sherpa Babu Chiri was killed by a freak accident in that climb.

Kara Knack from the Griffith Observatory was our speaker on 10/19/01

New member Gerry Smallwood introduced Kara Knack. She explained to us how the Griffith Observatory will be closing on 1/7/02 and will remain closed for 3 years for renovation.

Our speaker gets a two thumbs up rating for her passionate presentation. This world needs more caring volunteers like her!
 

 

Thanks to new member Steve Alexis and Asiana Airlines this years Rotary Golf Classic has a full supply of golf balls to give to our tournament participants. Steve explained to me that Asiana Airlines is the only way to fly for those of us with a Korea, Japan, China or other Asian destination. One of Asiana's main goals is to take great care of it's business customers.

 Steve, I can't wait to hear more about you and your business when you give us your upcoming craft talk!

 Suzanne Wilson, chief project manager for the  Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center was our speaker on 10/12/01

Suzanne (introduced by our new member Tulin Ozkaragoz) showed us a slide show presentation of architectural drawings and artist's renderings of the future hospital. Boy am I impressed, the hospital with its more friendly appeal will look and feel more like a five star hotel. Program VP George Collins is shown with Jean Wyner. Jean not only is an executive of the Hospital, she is President of the Santa Monica Kiwanis Club. (Jean, I hope my Kiwanian partner Charlie Wiese doesn't find out that you were at a Rotary meeting)!

Meditation Expert Bond Wright (shown with her Australian wind pipe) was our guest speaker for lunch on 10/05/01. Bond explained how important it is to bring ones opponent to his or her senses, but not to  humiliate. Stan Johnson introduced our guest Eva Brodehl from Germany as a visiting Rotarian. Eva is a medical student (she also is the VP of the Heidelberg, Germany Rotaract Club) and was studying in the US at Harvard for the summer. I promised Eva that I would put her picture on the Web so her proud parents could see a part of her trip to America.

Susan Dawson introduced Peter Atkins, CEO of the Los County Arboretum as our guest speaker for lunch on 9/28/01. Peter reminded us that mankind's existence is 100% dependent on  plants.

New members Karim Jaude and Radomir Samardzic are shown with luncheon guest speaker Italian Consul General Massimo Roscigno on 9/21/01. Massimo says that the Italian Government is 100% behind the U.S. in it's fight against terrorists.

The "Dance Doctor" John Cassese  has a couple of his students perform the flip and role "Swing" dance maneuver for us at lunch on 9/14/01
Our newest member Charlie Christensen and his wife Kristy impressed John with their new dance moves.
Just after receiving a couple of quick lessons from her instructor John, Karen Baker is shown with her partner Hank Walther . This picture shows Karen immediately  before taking off and performing a perfect "Flip and Role."

Over 115 were in attendance for the Sept 7, 2001 meeting, way to go VP of Programs George Collins!

Monsignor Kevin Kostelnik was introduced by our own Monsignor Lloyd Torgenson. Kevin, pastor of the new City of Angels Cathedral, talked about how Los Angeles will soon have a "sacred place"  where all people of all faiths can go in time of crisis. Jim Reidy was recognized for his 50th wedding anniversary. Jim took his wife on a five week European vacation to celebrate (one week for each ten years). Congratulations Jim!

Bunni Dybnis from Liv Care was our speaker on 8/24/01. She told us that 80% of seniors want  to remain independent for as long as possible as they grow older. She reminded us how important it is to take care of ones self when young in order to be able to accomplish this goal.
