Santa
Monica, California – The week of March 18, 2002 was “Rotary Reads to Kids”
week for The Rotary Club of Santa Monica. Celebrating the sixth year of our key
literacy program, Rotarian “readers” visited 44 classrooms at four Santa
Monica participating schools: Will Rogers Learning Community, John Muir
Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School and Edison Language Academy.
Books
read during the Rotarian visits were purchased through the Los Angeles Times
‘Read By 9’ Holiday Book Drive 2001. Through the book drive, 7800 award
winning new books for grades K-3 were purchased and donated by The Rotary Club
of Santa Monica to Santa Monica and Los Angeles School Districts.
This
year, as part of the “Rotary Reads to Kids” program, Rotarians also helped
launch a Santa Monica Public Library Card Campaign by distributing
approximately 1000 applications to students.
