Coming Our Way

Dr. Stan Stahl is that rare individual capable of speaking intelligently about technology management to business executives. An information security pioneer, Dr. Stahl’s extensive information security portfolio includes the White House, Air Force Ballistic Missile Command, Army Communications and Electronics Command, and the Air Force Logistics Command. As President and Chief Security Officer for Citadel Information Group, Dr. Stahl is responsible for developing and implementing the firm’s innovative strategies for helping business executives more effectively manage the security of critical information assets. If you have an interest in protecting proprietary information and preventing financial fraud, March 21st is too important to miss.  Be there.

In addition, speaking of important things to do on March 21st, it’s the day our Past Presidents will be recognized. For those of you who have served in this august capacity, please make plans to attend.  The rest of us will be there to stand and applaud.

Distinguished, Indeed

The Distinguished Service Award is coveted among those who so earnestly live their lives that they are candidates for doing what they do naturally. This award embodies the positive values, morals, traditions, and dedication to the community that serve as the cornerstones of the Jaycee philosophy. The Santa Monica Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees for short, identified seven such stellar nominees: Raymond Evans, Kathy Irby, Richard Schreinert, Oscar De La Torre, Kristin Walther, Teri & Jonathan Wang, and Kecia Weller. The Distinguished Service Award was given to Kathy Irby, a Vice President of Encino State Bank, who was nominated by the Kiwanis Club.  Kudos to her and her fellow nominees for their outstanding contributions to humanity.

Heads Up

The head table had its usual flair. Pastor Bill Wood gave the invocation. Members were introduced to new member Larry Mortorff and Jim Reidy welcomed visiting Rotarians and guests. Herb Roney was the song leader today, and Carol Jackson tickled the ivories.

Jaycee officials to present the Distinguished Service Award were Robert Cornish, Mai Vu, Roger Harrison and Carrie Spencer, Karen Bauer, and Ken Genser.

Hugh Travis said a gracious farewell as he left our Rotary Club after 10 years for a new position with the Boy Scouts in Baltimore, Maryland. He was grateful for the ongoing support given to him during his membership, and will cherish his memories of how our Club embraces Service Above Self.

The Welcome Mat

It was good to see Barbara Hopper again (thanks, Jack).  The welcome mat is always out for you. Welcome also to Rick Motecs, Sarah Stimson, Oscar de la Torre, Clare Bailas, Janet Walther, and Larry Mortorff.

Of Significance

bulletIt’s democracy in action.  Rotarians have the opportunity to recommend changes that govern Rotary. For those of you with fresh ideas, please contact Bill Crookston or Dick Rice with your input.

bulletMay 1st is the beginning of the big weekend at The Pechanga Resort in Temecula.  If you plan to attend the District Conference, book your reservation now because the demand is high. Information can be obtained at http://www.rotary5280.org/conference/. Here’s some of what’s in store in addition to the break-out sessions: winery tour and tasting, Governor’s Banquet, Sunday Brunch, golf, tennis, 5K run/walk, casino, and lots more!

bulletMarch 29th  will see another Immunization Clinic at St. John’s Hospital.  Show up at 9:00 AM after parking for free behind the Center for Healthy Aging.

bulletNorma Barnes reminded us that March 31st through April 4th has been designated Rotary Reads to Kids week. Volunteers were asked to read to kids in grades K, 1 and 2 at Edison, McKinley, John Muir and Rogers elementary schools. Please put your name on the sign up sheets to share yourself with our children.

bulletThree people can make a difference.  That’s how many more Rotary license plate orders are needed to keep our Rotary License Plate campaign alive.  Please, help us keep the $211,240 already collected.  One. Two. Three.  That’s all it takes. Log on to RLP Website: http://www.ca-rotarylicenseplates.org/

bulletApril 25th is the date to acknowledge your assistant…you know, the one who’s probably responsible for making sure you actually attend all of our weekly Rotary meetings. We’re having a fashion show and special treats for these unsung heroes.  Let Linda Gray know how many guests you’ll be bringing so they can all be accommodated.

bulletJohn Miller announced that applications are due this month to participate in the student exchange with Japan that will take place June 24th through July 25th. The offspring of Rotarians are given first priority. It’s a remarkable opportunity for our youth.  Take advantage of it.

bulletAnother good deed appreciated.  John McIntire, John Bohn, and several other past presidents conducted a fireside at John Bohn’s house.  This event orients new Rotarians to the culture of the Club, the rules of the game, and the history that brought us all here.

Fine Time

What better reason to get fined than having your daughter get engaged?  That’s why Hank Walther gets to pay $100 for his daughter Kristin’s (a Distinguished Service Award nominee) intended nuptials to Steve Chapin. With their happy smiles, who could complain?

Yes, wandering Rotarians can return, but it’ll cost ‘em. Eric Branden and Rita Kitts were each hit with a $25 fine that Kiwanian Eddie Gurboian magnanimously paid.

How much is it worth to see a photo of Con Oyler dressed as a  woman (standing next to his wife, who’s dressed as a man)? The answer: $200, since he’s such a good dancer while wearing high heels.
