July 14: Club Assembly, 10:30 a.m. to noon, when District Governor Vicki Radel joins us for her visit.

June 21: Joint Board meeting for the outgoing and incoming boards and the annual meeting of the past presidents at the home of John Lehne. It all starts at 5:30 p.m. Please be there. Sumptuous Greek food will be served.

Week 42—Our Southern Neighbors

Good morning, Americans! You know what the news is. Now you're going to hear the REST of the story!!! And now for what it's worth…

Head tablers for the June 9, 2000, meeting were the invocateur and song leader Herb Roney, program chair of the day "Herb" Hugh Travis, "Herb" Chris Baker, "Herb" Ed Kim, "Herb" Al Drysch, and guest introducer "Herb" Joe Gonzales, the "happy Hispanic" according to Jack.

For more reasons than one "Herb," President Jack was very gracious in his version of "Truth and/or Consequences." Frank Lavac got out of a fine for his nearly-Clio-Award-nominated TV commercial for Science Diet. Frank Blenkhorn got sympathy but no fine for his long airport wait when United cancelled his flight from Hawaii. Jim Haljun didn't have to pay for finishing his year as Chamber president. And David Bohn got away with wearing the wrong badge without paying the price. David and Paul are lucky!!! Then since Joe Metoyer has already paid dearly for trying to explain how his wife's car got hit while it was in his care, he got off scot-free. However, Phil Tirone paid $100 for missing the Assistant District Governor's presentation of the plaque honoring his work as chair of District's Membership Development. Guess he was out developing membership!!

Consul General Jose Luis Bernal represents the largest consulate for Mexico in the world. Mexico's economy is growing while it is the 8th most important country in international trade. NAFTA has been good for Mexico—new trade agreements and new jobs. He is very positive about Mexico.

Events that have Changed our Outlook on the World Forever

On July 17, 1999, at 8:06 a.m. breaking news on NBC reported that the plane of John F. Kennedy, Jr., had disappeared. "A massive air, land, and sea search is underway for the Kennedy plane." Later ABC reported that JFK, Jr., "and his wife and his sister-in-law are missing and presumed to be dead." That weekend, television coverage was filled with the search and rescue efforts that later became search and recovery. Later in the week, the cameras were fixed on the destroyer USS Briscoe as she escorted the families out to a place near the crash site where the ashes were buried at sea. But who can forget the image of that 3-year-old as he saluted his father's funeral cortege?

The GI bill was signed into law on June 22, 1944. It was the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 and helped 2.25 million war vets attend college.

In the morning of June 25, 1950, the North Korean People's Army invaded South Korea, the start of the Korean War.

Serving as editor of the Rota-Monica for the past two years has been very rewarding and a lot of fun! The editorial staff has taken great pride in the fact that we were the only paper never to mention Monica Lewinsky during that scandal. And imagine our surprise when one time our little paper was mentioned in the Inside Scoop column of the Our Times. This year we received the coveted District 5280 Club of Distinction Golden Quill award.

Thank you, Herb Roney, for your confidence in me in the first place. Many thanks go to those of you who have helped so much—who have contributed articles or information, taken notes, or given encouragement during these two years. I will never forget you. I hope we all found out a little more about Rotary, learned a little history, and had a good chuckle along the way.
